On Friday, November 18th, V.P. elect Mike Pence took time out of his busy schedule to relax at the Broadway play, ‘Hamilton’. But unexpectedly, when he had entered the theater there were numerous cheers and multiple boos from the musical attendees. After Pence spent the night enjoying the musical about the life of the American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, the tables had really taken a turn when he was about to leave the theater. Pence was stopped by the cast lead, Brandon Dixon, who portrays Aaron Burr in ‘Hamilton’. From the stage, Dixon said, “Vice President- elect Pence, we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us here at ‘Hamilton’: An American musical’. We really do. We,sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us. All of us.” Dixon concludes. The next day after learning about the incident Trump tweets out, “Our wonder future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of ‘Hamilton’, cameras blazing. This should not happen!” exclaims Trump. Dixon later responds to the tweet saying, “@realDonaldTrump conversation is not harassment sir. And I appreciate @mike_pence for stopping to listen.” When Pence was interviewed on this topic later that week he claimed, “ I wasn’t offended by the ‘Hamilton’ cast”. Because of this act by the cast, Trump and the base of his supporters felt that this was a form of bullying, and not only an unprofessional act by the cast but also a double entendre of the word “staged”. Meaning, that the bullying was staged (basically, they knew they were going to say something considering he had a notecard and everyone on stage). The second part of the entendre is that Dixon used the stage, hence part of the “staging” as his platform of attacking Pence. Some may consider this act of bullying at an inappropriate location towards someone just there to enjoy a night off. On the other hand, Hamilton fans are applauding the cast once again for speaking out against Pence. Overall, the election results are already showing major social effects even nearly a month after November 8th.
